Die Raupe und Alice sahen einander eine zeitlang schweigend an:
Schließlich nahm die Raupe die Wasserpfeife aus dem Mund und sprach sie mit langsamer schleppender Stimme an:
"Wer bist du?" fragte die Raupe.
Das war keine allzu ermutigende Einleitung für eine Unterhaltung.
Alice antwortete einigermaßen schüchtern: "Ich - ich weiß es nicht so genau, Sir, jedenfalls im Augenblick nicht - das heißt heute morgen, als ich aufstand, wusste ich noch, wer ich war, aber ich glaube, seitdem bin ich einige Male verwandelt worden."
"Was meinst du damit?" fragte die Raupe streng. "Erklär dich!"
"Ich fürchte, ich kann es nicht deutlicher ausdrücken", antwortete Alice sehr höflich, "denn ich verstehe es ja selbst nicht; außerdem ist es sehr verwirrend, an einem einzigen Tag so viele verschiedene Größen zu haben."
"Das ist es nicht", sagte die RAupe...
"Nun, vielleicht empfindet Ihr das anders", sagte Alice. "Ich weiß nur eines: Mir kommt das alles sehr seltsam vor."
"DIR!" sagte die Raupe verächtlich. "Wer bist DU?"...
Weil die Raupe offensichtlich sehr schlechter Laune war, wandte Alice sich ab... "Komm zurück!" rief die Raupe hinter ihr her. "Ich habe dir etwas Wichtiges zu sagen!"
Das klang vielversprechend. Alice wandte sich um und kehrte zurück.
"Du musst dich beherrschen", sagte die Raupe.
"Ist das alles?" fragte Alice
