AccessAllAreas: Hey, Chester. How are you?
Chester Bennington: I’m good, thanks. How are you?

AccessAllAreas: I’m really good, thanks. Where am I talking to you from today?
Chester Bennington: I am in Arizona, my home state.

AccessAllAreas: Awesome, always good to have some downtime. It has been a while since you were last here in 2007, but you’re finally coming back to Australia in December on your world tour! How does it feel to be coming back down under?
Chester Bennington: We’re really excited! We love playing there and obviously we love the weather; we just spent the last six weeks in Europe where it was cold and grey, so we’re looking forward to coming down and sweating a little bit and performing our new music. It’s just a really exciting time, we’ve been having a great time on tour so far, the shows have been great. We’re looking forward to it.

AccessAllAreas: What are your memories from your previous visits? Have you done the tourist stuff before?
Chester Bennington: I think some of the guys have been around. I don’t really do a lot when I go on tour, I usually spend most of my days recovering from the show the night before! We like to get out and do some things. Last time we played in Australia we played with Chris Parnell, that was a really great experience, singing every night with one of the greatest vocalists of all time. We became great friends, so that’s a really nice thing to remember, beginning that friendship with Chris in Australia.

AccessAllAreas: You’ve just announced you’ll be finishing up you’re Australian tour with a date in Canberra? Ever been there before?
Chester Bennington: I don’t think so. I’m not sure… I usually try not to think about too many things when it comes to touring. Life can lose its spontaneity when your life is planned out two years in advance.

AccessAllAreas: How do Australian audiences stack up against those overseas?
Chester Bennington: Crowds are typically pretty similar now, I think it really depends on how much energy the band is putting out and I think that we typically find that the more energy we give, the more exciting our show is, the more we get back. And the crowds in Australia aren’t really that much different than the crowds that we have anywhere else. I love playing for our fans – they sing every song, they’re up on their feet, they mosh, they crowd surf. It’s awesome. We have the best fans in the world. We’re lucky in that sense.

AccessAllAreas: Can you tell me about the production you’re bringing to Australia?
Chester Bennington: Well, I certainly don’t want to over-hype it but we really wanted to elevate the visual aspect of our show this time around. We also felt it helped tie together some of the themes from our older songs to the newer music. We decided to really put together a more stunning visual show, so we’ve got some really cool projections, we’ve got great lights. I’m not sure if we’re going with our flat stage there or we’re going with our chevron-shaped stage but, either way, there’s just a lot of really great visual content going on. And it’s something that a lot of our fans, if they’ve seen us before, it’ll be a new experience for them.

AccessAllAreas: Now, I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but Jay-Z is touring Australia with U2 through the same touring company as you guys while you’re in the country… Is a guest appearance at either’s show a possibility?
Chester Bennington: It’s always a possibility. We’re good friends with Jay, there has not been any discussions about it but a lot of the things we do with Jay are pretty spontaneous. We’ve been in New York City at the same time and on the day of the show gotten a phone call saying, ‘Hey, Jay wants to come down.’ And we’re like, ‘Yeah, he can jump up on stage if he wants!’ So it’s happened before, so it wouldn’t shock me if it happened again. But usually what we do with Jay, the best stuff and the way we seem to work, is usually pretty organic and spontaneous. So I don’t know if that’s going to happen but it’s not beyond reality.

AccessAllAreas: You sustained an injury when you last toured Australia, breaking your wrist in Melbourne. Planning to be a bit more cautious this time around?
Chester Bennington: I think the only thing I learnt from that was not to be late on your jumps! [Laughs] I was a little bit behind where I wanted to be on the stage and my foot got caught on the stairs, so if I’ve learned anything it’s just to think about what I’m doing a little more before I do it. But I’m still very passionate and everything, I’ve been going off at these shows. I don’t let anything like a broken arm or a broken wrist or anything like that keep me from doing what I’m supposed to be doing up there.

AccessAllAreas: That’s the rock n roll spirit right there! Who will be opening for you on this upcoming tour?
Chester Bennington: We’ll be playing with a band called Dead Letter Circus, they are from Australia, obviously. … We’re really excited. I think they’re a great band. We’re Looking forward to playing with them.

AccessAllAreas: Did you have a hand in deciding who opened for you?
Chester Bennington: I did. I heard early on of this band and I listened to their music and thought that they’d be a great fit playing with us. They seem like they really have a lot of energy and the music is great, so I really thought that it would be a good idea for us to go out there and play with some of the local talent.

AccessAllAreas: A Thousand Suns has been out for a couple of months now, what is the bands reaction to how it has been received? Do you still get a rush from getting a #1 album?
Chester Bennington: Yeah, when something you create does well, it’s exciting. We didn’t expect to be #1, it’s something that’s nice. But we really just want to make the best record we can make and we knew before we released the album that we were happy with it, and at the same time we also knew also, that we feel this way with every album we put out, you just don’t know how people are going to react. Are people going to love it? Are they going to hate it? So when it does well it is very exciting and we always try to challenge ourselves with our records, we try to challenge our fans. And our fans always show up. Our fans always accept the challenge and they love what we’re doing and keep supporting us, which is amazing.

AccessAllAreas: Do you ever go back and listen to the older albums? Ten years on, what are your thoughts on Hybrid Theory?
Chester Bennington: It’s interesting that you ask that, linking this to the previous question you asked; fan reactions are always mixed because some people want you to continue doing what have been doing, it’s what they like. Some people don’t want you to do the same thing at all, they want you to keep doing something different because you’ve already done your previous albums, they want something new. So you always get a mixed reaction from both sides of the client. People love a new direction or they hate it. There was a lot of people saying this record sounds so different from anything you’ve done before and being in the band I have a very hard time recognising what that means. So I went back and listened to all of our albums back to back on a long road trip; I listened from Hybrid Theory all the way to the end of A Thousand Suns and it was interesting because for the first time in my career I listened to Hybrid Theory and I was like, ‘Wow, this sounds like it came out two years ago.’ Whereas, I think, Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns feel fresh and new and exciting, as opposed to that was the way I felt about Hybrid Theory and Meteora when those records came out, they felt fresh and new and different. It was a cool experience, it was nice to feel the change, to recognise that we are doing something new and something different and fresh with our new music.

AccessAllAreas: Do you feel it’s an organic evolution with your music as it’s changed over the years?
Chester Bennington: I do. We really put a lot of emphasis on not regurgitating what we’ve done before. So in doing that, it forces us to go back and rethink how we write songs and how we create a sound for whatever purpose they have in the song. So it does keep things new, it keeps us on our toes and I think that it also helps keep things moving in a more creatively sound way. We’re not just repeating ourselves, this could kind of become more like a job, a music factory, just stamping out these songs. So it does keep things organic and I think that’s something I really appreciate about being in this band.

AccessAllAreas: I have to ask about Saw 3D! How did you get into that?
Chester Bennington: [Laughs] I kind of stumbled onto that one. I have a friend who lives next to the producer of the films and I’ve seen all the movies and the producer found out that I was excited to go see it – at the time Saw V had just come out. I was really excited about seeing it and I saw it the night before and my friend told his neighbour that I saw it and so he asked if I was interested in doing a role in one of the films and it worked out that on his latest film I had the time to go and do it. I really had a great time doing it, it was really a lot of fun. I’m not really an active actor, I don’t go out and audition for roles or anything, so if I have an opportunity to do something like that, something I felt compelled to take advantage of. It was a lot of fun.

AccessAllAreas: Looking ahead to 2011, what is on the horizon for Linkin Park? Will there be a possible live DVD from this world tour?
Chester Bennington: I don’t know. We haven’t really discussed anything like that, we’re really more focused on performing these shows and putting on a great live show and really focused on working on our next album. We tend to be pretty spontaneous with what we do, so if there is a live dvd or something to give something to our fans, something that they’ll like… I think we’re always trying to do something for our fans and give them more than just a record and a chance to see use live. You never know. But I think what we’re really looking forward to most in the coming year is putting out another record.

Soll ja schließlich was besonderes werden. Für ne weitere Live-DVD wär ich natürlich auch. Außerdem könnten sie evtl mehr so Demos verwerten. Aus Pale und Halo könnten richtig gute Lieder werden.
